Fitness classes and groups are a great way to get a little more movement into your day while reaping the mental health benefits of connecting with others. However, with cost-of-living pressures biting hard for many people, finding the spare cash to spend on a class isn’t always possible. But did you know that there are a surprising number of free classes out there? The trick is knowing where to look! Check out our top tips for finding FREE classes and groups near you.

“What’s on” in your community

Check out your local government’s “what’s on” or “events” page for the latest announcements on free fitness events and classes running in your community. As many free programs offered by local governments are seasonal or run for a limited time, this is a great way to find the most up-to-date information.

Eventbrite

A great way to find free fitness classes and events near you is to use the Eventbrite website. Many local events, even those run by your local government or community groups, use Eventbrite to promote their event and for easy booking. To navigate the website, click “search events” at the top of the page and enter what you’re looking for (e.g. yoga, fitness etc). Then select your desired location, followed by the “free” filter. You can also access other filters including date, price and format once you have made the initial search.

Act Belong Commit activity finder

Another great tool to help you search for fitness events is the Act Belong Commit activity finder. You can filter by activity, location and to view free events only.

Facebook groups & events

Searching for free events on Facebook is a great way to find regular and one-off local fitness classes. You can join a Facebook group that shares fitness events, or search for events and classes directly.

Parkrun

Whether you’re a seasoned runner or new to a light shuffle, Parkrun is a great community event to check out with locations all over Australia. Use their interactive map to find a course near you.

Outdoor gyms

If you’re interested in taking your gym workout outside where there are no joining fees or membership payments required, using your local park’s outdoor exercise equipment might be perfect for you. See our post on finding an outdoor gym near you for everything you need to know.
